Biography

Macha Ovtchinnikova is a filmmaker and teacher-researcher. Her documentary films include "The scar of the Earth" (presented at mahJ, Mémorial de la Shoah, San Francisco Jewish film festival...) and "My Russian 90's" (IDFF Artdocfest, Flahertiana, DokuBaku, Ji.hlava academy, Rencontres d'août de Lussas...). Her first fiction film "Red Emma", inspired by the life of anarchist and feminist Emma Goldman, was presented at the Krakow Film Festival, Torino Film Festival, Les Nuits MED, IFF Amiens, Landshut Short Film Festival... Her new short film project “Capital Punishment” is selected at European short pitch 2025 (Leiden Shorts). A lecturer at the University of Strasbourg, she also writes on cinema and contemporary art. Her latest books, "Temporal forms and experiences in the cinema of Kira Muratova, Andrei Tarkovsky and Andrei Zviaguintsev" and "Chantal Akerman's sensitive interiors: films and installations - aesthetic passages" was published in 2023 and 2024.
