The journey will guide participants through the Giardini Park, including brief moments of discovering the different tree species found there.

The current castle of Este was built in the years 1339-1340, on the initiative of the Lord of Padua Ubertino da Carrara. With a wall perimeter about 1000 m long, defended by 14 towers (now reduced to 12) and lying on the slopes of Mount Murale, this fortress has actually replaced the first castle, that of the Marquis of Este, built on the hill area since the eleventh century and seriously damaged by the wars of '200 and '300. In the fourteenth century, after having incorporated the flat area to the south and east of the original nucleus, the castle of Carrara housed in its interior troop quarters, armories, stables, perhaps even homes, remaining separated from the village of Este through the channel Sirone that ran along the current Via G. Negri. The castle, with its two "maistre" towers, the one at the top and the one at the Porta del Soccorso (which opens towards Baone), remained intact for over two centuries, until it was purchased by the powerful Venetian Mocenigo family in the second half of the 16th century. The inland area, instead, now devoid of any military use, already after the Venetian conquest at the beginning of the 15th century began to undergo changes in use, with the planting of orchards, the cultivation of part of the land and even the construction of small houses to house the "fittavoli". Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, under the ownership of the Mocenigo family, a vast garden was created, extending as far as the foothills on either side of a scenic staircase. The sculptures still visible today on the southern side of the castle date back to this period. A devastating fire in 1785 caused the destruction of the east wing of the Venetian palace; in the first half of the 19th century the whole complex was bought by the Trieste family, and then passed to the Da Zara brothers, who in 1887 sold it to the Municipality. Once it became public property, the monument changed its use again: the surviving wing of Palazzo Mocenigo was chosen as the prestigious seat of the city's archaeological museum (which later became the national museum), while the north-eastern area of the Carrarese castle was used as the Foro Boario, i.e. the place for the cattle market. The eighteenth-century park underwent a radical transformation in the years 1914-15, when it was decided to resitemare the green area, already used as a public garden. The works involved the demolition of the steep Venetian staircase and the creation of sloping terraces. This is how the Italian gardens as we know them today take shape, with orderly avenues and geometric flowerbeds, which preserve several centuries-old plants. The most noteworthy are the monumental wisteria (which overlooks the secondary door on the south side of the walls) and some specimens of cedars of Lebanon and the Himalayas.&nbsp;

The Teatro dei Filodrammatici was inaugurated in 1978 but was built on the ruins of the former Oratory of the Holy Spirit, probably built at the end of 1600. The hall is run with regular prose seasons from autumn to spring. Numerous companies have been guests there; an almost complete showcase of the amateur (and sometimes professional) activity of the Triveneto, with a very wide repertoire, that privileges above all the Veneto theater. Parallel to the show business, the Calle della Musica theater performs other complementary functions: it hosts, for example, concerts, screenings, conferences, book presentations and other social and cultural initiatives. In one of the most characteristic locations in the center, with its intimate and welcoming appearance (also following a recent restoration), we can well say that the Teatro dei Filodrammatici has taken on the role of the city's "public lounge".

Book presentation of *_Salire per sopravvivere. Gli ecosistemi montani alla prova della crisi climatica_* (People, 2026) with author **Chiara Bettega**. Moderated by Marco Milan.

Mountains are reservoirs of biodiversity that are fundamental to the functioning of the planet's ecosystems. However, climate change and shifts in how we inhabit and traverse mountain environments are profoundly altering the living conditions of the species that populate them. Their most evident response is a vertical migration—that act of "climbing to survive" which, for some life forms, represents an opportunity, while for others, it spells doom.

In this new volume from People’s *L’Altramontagna* series, Chiara Bettega proposes a journey that is, by necessity, an uphill climb: from mixed mid-mountain woodlands to coniferous forests, from alpine meadows to rocky terrain, and up to the nival zone of glaciers and the summit itself. It is a journey into the complexity of mountain ecosystems, along that "escalator to extinction" where some species risk vanishing, while others find a chance for resilience in the mountains' richness and diversity.

**Chiara Bettega** is an ornithologist and a collaborator with MUSE (the Science Museum of Trento). A Natural Sciences graduate, she has worked in England and Spain, focusing on nocturnal birds of prey and high-altitude birds.

The event will take place on **Sunday, September 6 at 6:30 PM** at the Teatro dei Filodrammatici in Este.

Le montagne sono serbatoi di biodiversità fondamentali per il funzionamento degli ecosistemi del pianeta. Ma il cambiamento climatico e le trasformazioni del nostro modo di abitare e attraversare gli ambienti montani stanno modificando profondamente le condizioni di vita delle specie che li popolano. La loro risposta più evidente è una migrazione verticale, quel “salire per sopravvivere” che per alcune forme di vita può rappresentare una possibilità, per altre una condanna.

Nel nuovo volume della collana L’_Altramontagna_ di People, Chiara Bettega propone un percorso necessariamente in salita: dai boschi misti di media montagna alle foreste di conifere, dalle praterie alpine agli ambienti rocciosi, fino alla fascia nivale dei ghiacciai e alla cima. Un viaggio dentro la complessità degli ecosistemi montani, lungo quella “scala mobile per l’estinzione” in cui alcune specie rischiano di scomparire, mentre altre trovano nella ricchezza e nella varietà della montagna una possibilità di resistenza.

**Chiara Bettega** è ricercatrice ornitologa e collaboratrice del MUSE, Museo delle Scienze di Trento. Laureata in Scienze Naturali, ha lavorato in Inghilterra e Spagna, occupandosi di rapaci notturni e uccelli d’alta quota.

_Al fiume!_ è il laboratorio di scrittura collettiva condotto da **Marco Gnaccolini** e **Raffaele Pizzatti Sertorelli** per **Atlante delle Rive**, rivolto a partecipanti tra i 18 e i 39 anni. Realizzato da **Jolefilm** in collaborazione con Euganea Film Festival, promosso da **Acquevenete**.

Un laboratorio di scrittura condivisa che unisce narrazione, ecologia e gioco di ruolo per esplorare il rapporto tra esseri umani e ambiente attraverso la gestione delle acque. I partecipanti costruiranno insieme la storia di un fiume, dalla nascita alla foce, attraversando paesaggi, trasformazioni e conflitti. 

Il laboratorio è concepito come un’esperienza di scrittura condivisa che unisce narrazione, ecologia e “gioco di ruolo”. Nasce dall’idea di creare un’esperienza condivisa in cui la scrittura diventa un modo per osservare, immaginare e discutere la gestione delle acque - e, più in generale, il rapporto tra esseri umani e ambiente - attraverso una pratica narrativa collettiva. I/le partecipanti sono chiamati e chiamate a costruire insieme la storia di un fiume, seguendolo dalla sua nascita fino alla sua fine, attraversando paesaggi, trasformazioni e conflitti. 

Il punto di partenza è una suggestione: il fiume non è solo un elemento naturale, ma un sistema vivo, attraversato da forze, decisioni e immaginari; è un ecosistema di storie, in cui il fiume diventa uno strumento per interrogare il territorio e le sue dinamiche. In questo senso, il progetto si ispira liberamente allo sguardo del geografo anarchico Élisée Reclus nel suo Storia di un ruscello, dove il corso d’acqua diventa racconto del territorio e delle sue relazioni, che può racchiudere simbolicamente istanze sociali e politiche degli esseri umani.

*Al fiume!* (To the River!) is a collective writing workshop led by **Marco Gnaccolini** and **Raffaele Pizzatti Sertorelli** for **Atlante delle Rive**, aimed at participants aged 18 to 39. It is produced by **Jolefilm** in collaboration with the Euganea Film Festival and promoted by **Acquevenete**.

This collaborative writing workshop combines storytelling, ecology, and role-playing to explore the relationship between humans and the environment through the lens of water management. Participants will collectively construct the story of a river—from its source to its mouth—traversing landscapes, transformations, and conflicts.

The workshop is conceived as a shared writing experience that blends storytelling, ecology, and role-playing. It stems from the idea of ​​creating a collaborative experience where writing becomes a means to observe, imagine, and discuss water management—and, more broadly, the human-environment relationship—through collective narrative practice. Participants are invited to build a river's story together, following its journey from source to end while navigating landscapes, transformations, and conflicts.

The starting point is a compelling concept: the river is not merely a natural feature but a living system shaped by forces, decisions, and collective imaginings. It is an ecosystem of stories, serving as a tool to examine the territory and its dynamics. In this sense, the project draws loose inspiration from the perspective of the anarchist geographer Élisée Reclus and his work *The Story of a Stream* (*Histoire d'un ruisseau*); here, the watercourse becomes a narrative of the landscape and its relationships, capable of symbolically encapsulating human social and political concerns. **WORKSHOP DATES**
