On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET302, a Boeing 737 MAX, crashed minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people on board, including the filmmaker’s brother, Max Edkins. Together with his father Don, Teboho Edkins returns to the site of the tragedy, where he encounters a community that processes grief through collective rituals and practices of care. Through archival materials, testimonies from the victims’ families, and landscapes marked by absence, _An Open Field _becomes a lucid and inevitable exploration of mourning, rooted in a personal loss yet opening onto a necessarily collective experience.

Teboho Edkins is a filmmaker raised between Lesotho, South Africa, and Europe. An Open Field has screened at major international documentary festivals, winning numerous awards, including Best Short Film at IDFA.
