Salire per sopravvivere

Mountains are reservoirs of biodiversity that are fundamental to the functioning of the planet's ecosystems. However, climate change and shifts in how we inhabit and traverse mountain environments are profoundly altering the living conditions of the species that populate them. Their most evident response is a vertical migration—that act of "climbing to survive" which, for some life forms, represents an opportunity, while for others, it spells doom.

In this new volume from People’s L’Altramontagna series, Chiara Bettega proposes a journey that is, by necessity, an uphill climb: from mixed mid-mountain woodlands to coniferous forests, from alpine meadows to rocky terrain, and up to the nival zone of glaciers and the summit itself. It is a journey into the complexity of mountain ecosystems, along that "escalator to extinction" where some species risk vanishing, while others find a chance for resilience in the mountains' richness and diversity.

Chiara Bettega is an ornithologist and a collaborator with MUSE (the Science Museum of Trento). A Natural Sciences graduate, she has worked in England and Spain, focusing on nocturnal birds of prey and high-altitude birds.
