La provincia no longer exists

A meeting with Sandro Frizziero, Giulia Scomazzon, and Nicole Trevisan. Moderated by Ginevra Lamberti.

The provincia—the provincial landscape—has always presented itself as a contradictory subject, at once loved and hated; today, it poses a true enigma, as we are no longer even certain of its existence. Having already been explored and depicted in the literature of great post-war masters and the postmodernist writers of the 1990s, this setting is once again revealing its multifaceted nature in the Veneto region through the works of authors born between the late 1970s and early 1990s—appearing in novels, on film screens, and in reportage, memoirs, and graphic novels. In this collective discussion, some of the most representative voices in contemporary Venetian fiction will use their own work to explore what the provincia actually is and what literary possibilities it holds.

Giulia Scomazzon made her debut in 2023 with the memoir La paura ferisce più di un coltello arrugginito (nottetempo; Bagutta Prize). Her latest novel is 8,6 gradi di separazione (nottetempo, 2026).

Sandro Frizziero was a finalist for the Campiello Prize with Sommersione (Fazi, 2020). In 2023, he published Il bene che ti voglio (Mondadori); La via delle stelle (nottetempo, 2026) is his fourth novel.

Nicole Trevisan won the 2023 Zeno Prize for her short story La ragazza. An editor and writer with the Spaghetti Writers collective, she made her debut in 2026 with the novel Malefica (Fandango).

Ginevra Lamberti has also published Tutti dormono nella valle (2022) and Perché comincio dalla fine (2019) with Marsilio. Her latest novel is Il pozzo vale più del tempo (Marsilio, 2024). The meeting will be held on Friday, September 4 at 6:30 PM at the Teatro dei Filodrammatici in Este.
